Darwin has always been a town with a brass band. The first town band was formed in 1895, when the settlement was still called Palmerston. Only two years later, most of the town was flattened by a cyclone. But, in the best tradition the band played on. Different versions of the band came and went in the century that followed, obliterated by wars, cyclones and harsh economic times, only to regroup afterwards.

The rationale for our current band came in 1981 when, eight years after the devastation of Darwin by Cyclone Tracy, a group of people met with the Lord Mayor Cec Black and said, ‘It’s time we had a band again.’
